Four Paws Growlers, LLC – dba Oregon’s Best
By Annette Langenstein, Staff Writer

Sylviane Huwe-Smith stands in front of the taps for the large variety of beers they carry.

Where can you go on the South Coast that’s sure to please both the kiddos and their parents? A place that serves ice cream and beer, of course! And that’s just what you’ll find at - Four Paws Growlers – Oregon’s Best, located at 1938 Newmark Avenue (behind McDonalds) in North Bend.

Sylviane Huwe-Smith operated the Baskin-Robbins store, also located on Newmark Avenue, for 12 years before leaving the franchise and opening Oregon’s Best. “We felt that we could serve fresher, less expensive ice cream by going with Umpqua Dairy out of Roseburg,” said Sylviane. “Umpqua Dairy has been so supportive and helpful, and I can order ice cream one day and have it here by the next. It’s a win-win situation for both me and my customers.”

Customers who enter Four Paws Growlers – Oregon’s Best are in for some surprises.  The store is bigger than Sylviane’s former place, with a totally different layout. “We still have 32 flavors of ice cream, cakes and novelties,” said Sylviane, “but we’ve added a growler station with 42 taps. The first three beer samples are free, and of course ice cream samples are always free. This is basically a growler station – deli – store, and my goal is to have hot dogs, brats, nachos, chili, soup bread bowls, spaghetti and meatballs… no deep fried foods. We have gluten-free and organic beer and ciders. Two taps will be for old-fashioned sodas from Steel Head – root beer and ginger ale. There’ll be something for everyone!”

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16, when Four Paws Growlers – Oregon’s Best will be having their Grand Opening from noon until 10 pm. There will be free beer samples from McKenzie Brewery in Eugene and Arch Rock Brewing in Gold Beach, to name a few. Enjoy free nachos, $1 hot dogs, $1 scoops of ice cream for kids, and $1.50 for an adult scoop. There will be raffles for t-shirts, pint glasses, growlers, ice cream and gift certificates.

I asked Sylviane how she came up with the idea to combine ice cream and beer.  “I was born in Belgium, and moved to the United States when I was 11,” she replied. “Even though I grew up here, I had a very European upbringing. In Europe, it’s commonplace for children to accompany their parents to pubs. People don’t go out and get drunk…it’s more like meeting for coffee like we do here.  I wanted to create an atmosphere where kids can go… it’s very kid-focused, but adults can enjoy themselves, too, by having a beer, eating food, watching TV, or using the Wi-Fi.  It’s a place for everyone!”

So bring the kids and stop by Four Paws Growlers – Oregon’s Best. Their winter hours are Tuesday from 2:30 to 9 pm, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9 pm, and they’re closed on Mondays. Summer hours will be extended.

Sylviane concluded the interview with, “I’m going to set limits on how much beer people drink while they’re in the store.  They can always fill their growlers for later, but while they’re here, they have to remember that this is a kids’ place…the parents just get to have a little fun, too!”
