Antique and Collectables of Coos Bay
By Annette Langenstein, Staff Writer

Diana Keith and Anella Dumas are co-owners of a wonderful shop located at 235 and 247 North Broadway Street in Coos Bay, where they’ve been open for business four years this November.  Antique and Collectables of Coos Bay is filled with everything from Hot Wheels to vintage jewelry, original art, antiques and just about any kind of collectible item you can imagine, “everything from A to Z,” according to Diana. “We have Roseville and Fenton glassware, and lots of china tea sets,” said Anella.

It’s just the two ladies running the store, but they have 40 vendors that come and work two days a month each, so the store is always fully staffed.

When I asked Diana what she would like people to know about their shop, she replied, “It’s clean!  It doesn’t smell like old peoples’ things. It’s light and bright, and we have a vast variety of merchandise. Even the colors we’ve painted our walls send a message to our customers. It’s bright and cheery in here, and when people come in they’re happy, and they shop.”

“I think probably jewelry is our biggest seller right now,” added Anella.

“There’s vintage jewelry as well as hand-made and new pieces,” said Diana.  “We have three ladies that make their own jewelry and sell it here.”

Anella Dumas and Dianna Keith, owners of Antique and Collectables of Coos Bay, show off some of their items.

I asked Anella what they have that people might be surprised to see in a place like this “We have full toy train sets,” said Anella. “We’ve placed them by the front door, and Vin, our train guy, positions himself there on purpose to talk to the men about the trains while their wives come farther into the store to shop!”

Anella has been in the antique business for 44 years and has owned four other shops, but this is the first time Diana has been an owner of this sort of business.  “We bought out the inventory of another shop owner and that’s how we started our business,” added Diana.

When I inquired about how their Shopper ad is working, Diana replied, “I think our Shopper ad is doing well for us, or else we wouldn’t keep advertising in it! We are seeing that it’s a cost-effective way to advertise.”

The day I interviewed the pair, they were gearing up for the monthly Wine Walk.  Anella explained, “We get lots of people coming in here during the Wine Walk, anywhere from 250 from 577 people!  We do really well selling during this event. Our store is wheelchair accessible, and there’s lots of room for people to walk around in here. ”

In November, Antique and Collectables will be participating in the Coos Bay Downtown Association Open House during their Customer Appreciation Day.  They’ll be providing snacks and drinks to all who enter.

I asked the ladies where they think the future will take them:   “Next door,” said Diana.  “We want to take over the space next door now that the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Society is no longer using it as their office.”

“I don’t like to see empty storefronts,” added Anella.

Antique and Collectables are open 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday. Give them a call at 541-808-2168 or stop by and browse the huge selection they have available and you may find just the item you’ve been looking for. As busy as these ladies are, you won’t be seeing an empty storefront in their location any time soon!
