Bay Area Mailing
By Lisa Carroll, Staff Writer
Published in the June 6, 2013 edition

Joanne Moss, owner of Bay Area Mailing, found Coos Bay almost by accident 6 years ago. She was a real estate agent living in Salem at the time, selling a house to a gal who in turn had a house to sell in Coos Bay. “My husband and I came down to take a look. It’s like paradise here. I was raised in Southern California and I grew up on the beach. I missed being by the water. It is so nice just to walk around here, where you can see the ocean and the bay. I love it here.” So, they bought the house themselves, and for three years, Joanne came to Coos Bay whenever she could. Finally, she decided to move here permanently and start Bay Area Mailing.

Bay Area Mailing is a one stop shop offering the following services: FedEx® Shipping, all Post Office services including post office box rentals, copying, faxing, email, and laminating; Fieldprint® finger printing services; Steven Ness legal forms; Notary Public services; Western Union services; and Bill Pay. If you’ve got a busy day ahead of you, no need to stand around and wait, either. You can simply drop off your packages and let Bay Area Mailing handle the rest. When your order has been processed, Joanne will call you with your total as part of her exclusive Stop and Go service.

But, if you’re not in a hurry to be anywhere, you may as well stick around. Joanne welcomes visitors with a cup of coffee or tea, and cookies. “I have a lot of people come in to check their mail, get a cup of coffee, sit down and chat or just read the paper. It’s nice. I wanted it to be less business-y and more homey, so it has that kind of atmosphere.”

That Joanne is a home-loving, community oriented person is reflected in her business. More than a mailing services store, Bay Area Mailing also features a gift shop stocked with candles, soaps, cards, totes, purses, t-shirts, signs, and stickers made by local crafters. Items are light weight so they can be easily mailed. One of the most unusual items I’ve seen are these little coin purses a local lady has made out of clam shells, if you can believe that. They are lined in cloth on the inside, and they close with a zipper.  What a perfect gift to send from the coast! “People like to shop,” Joanne said, “and I wanted a place where they can get a little gift and a card, and I could mail it for them. They they only have to come to one place.” Bay Area Mailing also hosts a Red Hat Room, featuring fun items such as hats, feathers, boas, jewelry, and clothing.

Joanne is strong supporter of local businesses and is happy to help people make connections to each other, as well as maintaining a bulletin board filled with local events and news. She is content here in Coos Bay and loves her work. “I’ll never get rich here, which is fine, because my little business is paying for itself. I enjoy the people, and it keeps me off the streets and out of trouble!” she quipped.
