Beyer Excavating
By Desiree Gaoiran, Staff Writer

Craig M. Beyer, owner of Beyer Excavating, is originally from Minnesota. Craig attended  the University of Minnesota College of Forestry and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Forest Resource Development. He started working for the U.S Forest Service in northern Minnesota. Craig  moved out west in 1978 to begin working for the Bureau of Land management (BLM) in Spokane, Washington. In 1983 he transferred to the Coos Bay District of BLM where he accumulated a total of 32 years of federal service. He retired from BLM in January of 2010 and began working for himself full time. “I love it here. Where I grew up in Minnesota we had nine months of winter and three months of poor sledding. I don’t miss the winters back home a bit!” Craig says.

Craig started out in the excavating business 10 years ago because there was a lot of work that he wanted to do on his property in North Bend. “My background in forestry is a real asset in providing my customers with a quality job. It’s an easy transition from maintaining logging roads to maintaining gravel driveways,” Craig says.

He started out with a little 20hp tractor and a dump trailer on his pick-up truck in January of 2004. He worked on the weekends and slowly his business progressed. He upgraded his equipment and gained new customers every year. “I get quite a few jobs from the Shopper. I would say 80% are people I have done work for that call on me again,” Craig says. Craig gets all of his rock from Main Rock, a local family business. “Sometimes they refer customers to me when someone is looking for a smaller job to be done,” he says.

Craig has an 8 cubic yard dump-truck, a 22,000 lb excavator, all terrain loader, and vibratory roller. He is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. His specialty is driveway maintenance, culvert installation, French drains, brush cutting, and clam bucket excavation. He will remove brush, construct/clean, and will fix/grade your gravel driveway if it is falling apart. Craig will deliver rock, construct/repair retaining walls, remove trash if necessary, and do small demolition projects. “I stay out of things I don’t do well. If the job is too big for me I will refer the customer to someone I know will do a good job for them,” Craig laughs. Craig is also a member of the Homebuilders Association of Southwestern Oregon, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and Life Member of the Society of American Foresters, Coos Bay Power Squadron, Tioga Chapter of Oregon Hunters Association, and the NRA. “I enjoy being involved in the community,” Craig says.

“I am the estimator, foreman, and operator. When I am working on a project I stay there until it is done. I focus on doing one good job at a time and it seems to be working,” Craig explains.

Do you have a project that needs to be done? Craig can help and if he can’t he will refer you to someone who can! You can reach Craig at 541-290-3957. CCB #158296
