Charleytown Marketplace
By Annette Langenstein, Staff Writer

Donna and John Kaiser are the owners of Charleytown Marketplace, a gift shop offering an amazing variety of items in Charleston.  Located at 91152 Cape Arago Highway, the Kaisers have owned the marketplace for nine years.  But you really have to go there yourself to see all that they have to offer.

“We started with two local artists and now we have over 140. We have everything from artwork, wood working, sweets from the Candy Basket in Portland, Euphoria chocolates, Misty Meadows jams and jellies, and local honey. Over the last few years we’ve really expanded our antique section.  We literally have new stuff coming in every day,” says Donna.

Donna and John Kaiser built the building that houses Charleytown Marketplace, which they have owned for nine years.

The Kaisers put a lot of emphasis on nautical items.  Donna showed me a beautiful wooden ship’s wheel and said, “We have nets and floats for landscaping, locally made seagulls, anything you need for outside decorating. We really try to use locally-made products.  The reason we call this the marketplace is because we intended this to be like an indoors farmer’s market, but open all year round.”

Donna and John carry a lot of Bigfoot items like books, bumper stickers, tee shirts, and posters. “I have over a hundred stories about Bigfoot from local people, and I’m thinking of writing a book on the subject,” says Donna.

I asked Donna how their Shopper ad has been working for them. “Excellently.  Our ads have been targeting specific items, like this ship’s wheel that we’ve had for over two years.  Within three days of putting that ad in the Shopper, we sold the wheel. For every ad that we’ve run in the Shopper we’ve had at least one person come in and look at the product.”

Charleytown Marketplace is open 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. They also have a food van, Big Dawg’s BBQ, in their parking lot that’s open noon to 4 pm those same days.  Their phone number is 541-888-0146.

“I think the most exciting thing about this store is that you can see something new every day,” said Donna.  “We have a friendly store that’s consistently open, provides free gift wrapping, and will ship items for customers.  If you haven’t checked us out, then you’re missing out!”
