Crystal Dolphin Gallery
By Annette Langenstein, Staff Writer

Ron and Beccy Kaneen have owned Crystal Dolphin Gallery, located at 1901 Sherman Avenue in North Bend, for 17 years. They formerly owned Western Family Insurance Agency, located in the Pony Village Mall, for eight years. Ron has been in this area for 40 years, but took a very circuitous route to where he is now.

A talented musician, Ron actually wound up being a chemist! While attending Humboldt State University he “decided to play Army for a while.”  In the service he became a medical laboratory technologist, and when he got out, he worked for two years in the biochemistry section of the University of California at Riverside. Still without a bachelor’s degree, Ron wound up at Humboldt State again, and stayed six years there as a half-time medical technologist. For the first two years he attended classes, but found he knew more than his medical technology professors, so he switched his major to music and got his Master’s Degree in Music Education. Ron taught music for ten years before he and Beccy left California. They settled in Coquille, where Ron taught ….science! “There’s something about music and science that goes hand-in-hand,” says Ron.

Eventually Ron quit teaching and he and Beccy opened up Western Family Insurance in Pony Village, but they left the mall when they discovered their current location 17 years ago.  They had three potters to begin with, increased their space and ended up with 123 artists showing their wares. It was only two years ago that they completely quit the insurance business.  “It’s much more fun running a gallery,” said Beccy.  “About four years ago we expanded into the bead business. We now have specialty beads and gemstones and actually have the largest selection of keshi pearls on the West Coast. These are beautiful non-nucleated pearls typically formed as by-products of pearl cultivation, and they have an irregular shape.”

Crystal Dolphin Gallery holds classes in pearl stringing and beading whenever several people are interested in taking a class. All except four of their 123 artists are local, and they have items ranging from oil paintings to pottery, Myrtlewood pieces, custom jewelry, glassware, gemstones, unusual hand-carved and decorated eggs…it’s a very eclectic mix. “Basically, we don’t say we’re a fine art gallery,” said Beccy. “We say we are a gallery of fine art.”

Ron is one of only three professional jewelers in the area, and he can literally design any type of setting for the many beautiful gemstones he carries. Custom jewelry is his specialty, and he showed me photos of some of the gorgeous pieces he’s designed.

If you’re looking for someone to design that perfect piece of fine jewelry, or just want to browse a wide and interesting selection of eclectic art, stop by Crystal Dolphin Gallery.  They’re open 11 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Or give them a call at 541-756-1989 and talk to the friendly couple who take a lot of pride in showing the beautiful items that local artists have designed throughout the years.
