D.A.J. Better Bargains Thrift Store

Don Sotin is the owner of a newly-opened store called D.A.J. Better Bargains Thrift Store, located at 63060 Hwy. 101 in Coos Bay. It’s an easy place to find, because it’s right across from the Bunker Hill 7-Eleven at the traffic light.

“I was co-owner of AMB Thrift Store for two and a half years,” said Don. “Then I decided to go out on my own, and now we’ve been open here for about a month.”

Don is no stranger to the South Coast, having been born and raised in North Bend. “I know a lot of people around here,” he said. “I moved away for a while, came back, and now I’m here for good!”

I asked Don to describe some of his inventory. “Well, we have just about everything,” he replied. “And if we don’t have it, I’ll do the calling, driving, walking or whatever it takes to get it!  But we have DVDs, music, games, dishes, some antiques and many other items.  We do lay-a-way and consignments, too. I try to give back to the people of our community as much as I can.”

So what makes D.A.J. Better Bargains Thrift Store different from other thrift stores in this area? “We actually do deliveries,” Don said. “I only charge for gas…my time and labor I donate.  I’ve delivered items all the way from Portland to Brookings.”

“We also have some great shopping deals here,” continued Don. “We keep business cards at the register, and people can keep track of their purchases. If you spend $50, you get 10% off; if you spend $100, you get 20% off. That way we can give back to our shoppers.”

I asked Don why he decided to advertise with the South Coast Shopper. “I had advertised with them before at my other business,” he replied. “I had a real good experience with the Shopper then, so I decided to keep advertising with them. My salesperson, Valerie, was great about showing me different advertising options, and the ladies in the front office are wonderful. Right now we have an ad telling people to mention that they saw us in the Shopper, and they get 10% off their purchase. I’ve been getting lots of customers because of my Shopper ad!”

As far as future plans, Don says “If we continue to do as well as we have here, I’m hoping to get another store going in a year or two down the road.”

So if you’re finding yourself short on cash and in need of some item, stop by D.A.J. Better Bargains Thrift Store. They’re open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Or give Don a call at 541-294-9367.

“I try to do better than most thrift stores,” said Don. “We even have a walker here for customers, and the store is handicap-accessible. I want to help people out as much as I can.”
