Coquille Valley Financial Management Has A New Name
Published in the March 10, 2016 edition

Contact: Nicki Miles 541-808-9290

Generations Tax and Wealth Management, LLC is the new name for Coquille Valley Financial Management, reflecting the firm’s commitment to long-term tax and financial services as well as the opening of a second location to serve the North Bend/Coos Bay area.

“We have always been a family business and now we’re making it official,” says longtime Myrtle Point tax and financial advisor Dick Chiesa, whose wife Barbara and daughter Nicki have been part of the firm for many years. “We are in fact two generations working together with a long-term approach of helping our clients pursue their financial goals.”

In addition to Dick Chiesa selling securities (through HD Vest Investment Services™ out of Irving, Texas), the firm also offers tax planning and preparation, estate planning, risk management, and retirement planning in what Chiesa calls a “holistic approach” for his clients. “Some firms just do taxes and have to refer their customers to others for estate planning and wealth strategies. Others just do investments. We look not only at taxes and investments, but also at retirement goals, medical expenditures and estate planning. Do you have a will, a trust or perhaps a child with special needs? In this day and age of constant changes in tax laws and other uncertainties, it’s important to have someone who can answer all those questions and address your goals.”

As for investment, “everybody’s risk tolerance is different,” says Chiesa. “Everybody’s personal story is different. That’s why we work with each client to create a plan for their individual goals.”

After graduating with a degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University in 1967, Dick and wife Barbara moved to Myrtle Point, where he taught business at the local high school and at Southwestern Oregon Community College. In 1974 he received his MBA in Financial Administration from Portland State University.  “By 1976 I felt the need for a new challenge, and purchased a small bookkeeping and tax business in Myrtle Point from Margaret Atchison.”

With Barbara’s help at the front desk and daughter Nicki lending a hand in the office, they built a core of loyal customers -- “loggers, farmers, contractors, truckers, cutters, factory workers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, members of the clergy, restaurant owners, insurance sales people, clerks, small business owners and everything in between,” says Chiesa. Many became friends through the years, and referred their friends to the firm.

About the time daughter Nicki went off to college in 1989, Dick decided to add financial planning to his services. “I realized that every financial planning decision has a tax consequence,” he says, “and that if I was going to do this, I was going to do it right.”  So it was back to school.  He took the classes and passed the tests to become a Certified Financial Planner™.  This was a rigorous course of study, but it covered all the areas of financial planning.  “It was all worth it,” says Chiesa. “It’s so gratifying to see so many of our clients who have pursued their goal of a secure and prosperous retirement, or are happy that they have helped their children or grandchildren afford a college education, or perhaps accumulated enough to afford a down payment on their first home. “

In the meantime, daughter Nicki was certified as a Licensed Tax Preparer as well as a Registered Representative, also with HD Vest. She has her Series 6, 63, 7, & 65 Securities Licenses as well as Health/Life Insurance Licenses. Rounding out the firm is Kathy Zumwalt (12 yrs.), Richard Cunningham (21 yrs.), and Darcy Arden (9 yrs.) who have all been instrumental in helping the business move forward.  “They are all committed to integrity and very committed to our clients,” says Chiesa. Joining the crew in the North Bend office is Brittany Cooper.

The firm’s newly-opened North Bend office is located at 2040 Public Square Court, Suite C. (off Broadway, underneath Mang Chiropractic Clinic).  The phone number is 541-808-9290.  They will also retain their original location at 531 Spruce St. in Myrtle Point (541-572-4080).
