Have you ever heard of a doctor prescribing rain for health reasons?
Well, after living in the lovely Virgin Islands for 30
years, John and Sarah Burrows were prescribed to move to a place where
there is a lot of rain. John had recurring battles with skin cancer.
His occupation as a marine contractor building docks kept him in the
elements most of the time, while Sarah ran a small gift shop.
Eventually John’s doctor told him to get out of the tropics or
the sun would kill him. “Go someplace where it rains a lot,
John!” John knew Oregon so he and Sarah decided to check out
areas to move to. After seeing the climate around Coquille was
literally ‘just what the doctor ordered’ they settled here
on the gorgeous Southern Oregon Coast in 1994 to retire. But they

Mr. Burrows would often go to the Coquille Saturday
Market to sell the belongings they didn’t need after moving here
from the Caribbean. He enjoyed the task so much that in February of
2000 they decided to open a retail business of their own.
The Oddity Shop is a successful mini-mall now, with 15
vendors selling a variety of items from vintage to new – gently
used furniture, antiques, collectibles, household items, a Book Loft
that includes children’s books, and all kinds of oddities
you’d never expect to find.
Mr. Burrows passed a few years ago, but Mrs. Burrows
continues to keep the shop open for business six days a week. “I
really enjoy my customers,” says Mrs. Burrows. “People here
are so nice. I don’t feel like I’m at work at all! I like
visiting with them or helping them find that special item they
