Bandon Jaunt Doubles Your Beach-Walking
Tom Baake
09/10/2020
PHOTO CAPTION: Calm waters lap at the rocks below the Coquille River Lighthouse in Bandon, but storm-tossed driftwood tells a tale of stronger weather and waves. The lighthouse is about halfway along this suggested walking tour.

By Tom Baake

A fun walk just north of Bandon features two kinds of beaches – ocean and river. I like making the walk into a loop. It's best to start in the morning. Even though the overcast might not have burned off yet, the north wind hasn't kicked up yet, either.

This two-beach loop walk within Bullards Beach State Park takes in the ocean beach just north of the North Jetty, with a return along the shoreline of the Coquille River as it makes its final meander to the sea. The ocean beach walk is pretty straightforward (and popular) but the riverwalk is more challenging, and you'll likely have it all to yourself. Admission to the state park is free.

Getting There

From Bandon, go north on US 101 for about 2 miles and turn left (W) into Bullards Beach State Park. Follow the access road past the campground and continue west. The road skirts the river, with beautiful picnic spots along the water and spacious lawns and more picnic tables on the inland side. It passes the Cut Creek horse campground. Just ahead is the first beach access parking area – go into it and park. Then walk over the foredune to the beach and head south.

(Mileages begin here:)

This beach north of the Coquille River North Jetty is prized for its agates and other colorful rocks. They're strewn along the sand and in some places occur in vast beds that get shifted around by wave action. The beds often abruptly start and stop. All of a sudden there's not so much as a pebble.

At about 1.6 miles the beach ends at the North Jetty. Scramble up through driftwood and rocks to the lighthouse. It is NOT advisable to venture out onto the jetty as large, unpredictable "sneaker" waves can occur at any time. You can see all the action and still stay safely off the jetty.

From the lighthouse, continue east along a trail atop the jetty. Down on the river, you might see crabbers in motorboats zooming back and forth tending their traps. The salmon run will also bring out recreational boaters.

At a bit under 2 miles into this walk, the trail meets a service road. Follow it to the end at about 2.5 miles, and from there step down to the river. The shoreline curves around the first of several coves. (At low tide it's possible to cut directly across the coves.)

The footing ranges from small river rocks to firmly-packed soil to softer-going sand. Washed-up stumps, driftwood and shoreline pines collapsed into the river require some scrambling to get around.

At 2.8 miles is an inlet crossed on a downed tree, and an even larger inlet at about 3 miles necessitates heading inland (west) to get around.

Another inlet at a bit over 4 miles is easily skirted, as is a sprawling carpet of low-growing, salt-tolerant pickleweed.

Is the wind holding back? If not, you may catch a glimpse of whitecaps out in the river.

But the end is in sight, so linger over the last stretch of shoreline, which has a particularly interesting assortment of fantastically sculpted driftwood. A service road is met at about 4.25 miles, and just beyond is the main access road.

Go left (W) and follow the road a few hundred feet to the entrance of the horse camp. Just past the entrance is an asphalt trail paralleling the access road, which leads west back to your starting point in the parking area for a total of about 4.6 miles.

By then the wind may have started really whipping. Amazing how fast it happens. Things go from dead calm to lose-your-hat in about the time it takes to read this article.

But now you know the secret – get an early start!

Abbreviations

Accepted Shopper Abbreviations  For consistency & clarity in the South Coast Shopper we use a set of standard classified ad abbreviations. They are listed here to help advertisers in writing their ads and readers in understanding the ads. (There is a fee for NOT abbreviating classified ads because our rates are based on these abbreviations)  UPDATE! We use abbreviations to save space in the paper, saving cost, that we pass on to our advertisers with lower classified rates than comparable papers across the Nation. A new way of naming products has developed that make product names unnecessarily longer. We will list these names in the traditional way to continue to save space in the paper, saving cost that we can continue to pass on to our advertisers. Examples: Ranger XLT by Ford would be abbreviated to: Ford Ranger XLT OceanRunner Rainbow Series by WildSeas would be abbreviated to: WildSeas Rainbow OceanRunner In the body of an ad always use numerals. Example: Newer 3bdr home. At the beginning of an ad spell out short numbers. (Example: Three bdr home.) As always, if you do not want your ad abbreviate we can use the longer version for $2.
