COQUILLE — The Air Force Band Golden West Winds will perform a free concert at 7 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 1, at the Sawdust Theatre.
Michael Thurman, theatre manager, said the show will be about one hour long, but patrons must obtain tickets from the U.S. Air Force website before the show. The link is below. The theatre is at 120 N. Adams St., Coquille.
The Golden West Winds are part of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, Calif.
“Comprising a flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, this flexible ensemble supports a wide variety of musical events, ranging from military ceremonies and patriotic shows to educational programs and recitals of original works for woodwind quintet,” said Sr. Airman Andrew M. Payton, USAF quintet spokesman. “The Golden West Winds excels at all styles of music, including marches, jazz, and classical.”
Payton added that the Golden West Winds especially are well-suited for music education engagements, such as general school assemblies or music workshops for all ages, from elementary to collegiate students and beyond.
“The quintets have had the honor to present masterclasses at prominent universities, conservatories, and arts academies across the West Coast,” he said. “Their ability to blend musical styles and push the woodwind quintet medium outside the box has led to several commissions over the years as they continue to champion new music by American composers.”
As part of the Band of the Golden West, the mission of The Golden West Winds is to harness musical excellence to honor our nation and those who have served, inspire patriotism and resilience in our airmen, guardians, and nations’ citizens, and connect the Air Force with the American public and community partners, Payton said.
“The excellence demonstrated by the Golden West Winds reflects the excellence displayed by all airmen stationed worldwide, whose selfless service and sacrifices ensure the freedoms enjoyed by citizens of the United States of America.”
